By default, Microsoft Word automatically changes straight quotation marks ( ‘ or ” ) to curly (smart or typographer’s) quotes as you type. This is fine if you are only authoring your works for applications not relating to article marketing. When smart quotes are converted to HTML, the quotes are converted to non-standard characters which end up littering your document with question mark symbols and/or other garbage code.

When in doubt, don’t allow your Ezine Articles to contain smart quotes:

Most articles that are put into article marketing distribution eventually end up being sent to an email newsletter audience. 2. Under Replace as you type, select or clear the “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes” check box.

Alternatively, you can copy your entire MS Word document over to a non Microsoft text editor (EditPlus, UltraEdit, TextPad, etc) and do a simple search and replace. Search and replace the smart quotes into standard quotes, apostrophes, dashes and dots if applicable.

Caution For Authors Who Do HTML Code For Their Articles in MS Word:

Unless you have smart quotes disabled, it should be noted that smart quotes are not valid HTML code. Therefore, dont even consider using MS Word to do HTML code unless you have the smart quotes feature disabled.

Nothing against this item – It’s probably a great product and a great way to save money (hence why I didn’t give it a bad star rating), but please know what you’re getting yourself into. I’m a Do-it-Yourselfer from way back for one, because I do like to save money and two, I like learning new things and I’m always up for a challenge. This was quite the challenge. I’m not adverse to mess, but this went beyond messy. I followed the instructions to a “T”, but still managed to get more toner spilling out than I actually got toner in the cartridge. I did it over the sink as another person recommended on a blog – a choice I later regretted. Long story short, I ended up having to throw the toner and cartridge out because it turned into such a huge mess, and I inhaled some of the toner by accident, making my throat and lungs feel very sore. I’ve since read that toner is a HUGE carcinogen (cancer-causing), so the idea that I not only inhaled it but also got it all over my sink – the sink that I wash dishes – dishes that I eat off of, left a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Buy this product if you know what you’re doing or are with someone who’s experienced, but take it from me – If you don’t know what you’re doing, cough up the extra money to avoid coughing up magenta toner for a month! This job made the advanced, home-made carpentry projects I’ve undertaken look like a kindergarten project!

p.s. I can’t stress this enough – If you’re going to give it a try, please wear a breathing mask and work outside, or at least in a well-ventilated area. The stuff I read about toner as a carcinogen was pretty scary!
